Born in London, in 1980, Charlie Swan is an artist known for both material investigations, such as pencil shaving works and invisible ink watercolours, and social commentary and intervention works. Examples of these include the creation of a pictorial educational syllabus promoting context and its understanding as a fundamental social tool, and an E.I.R environmental impact regulation sticker. This sticker, applied to food and household goods, allows consumers a more informed, implication based purchase.

This exhibition titled “The only habitable planet for now,” comprises primarily of landscape oil paintings. Produced in the La Ciotat region, the works include pencil shavings and pencil components. Developed out of a curiosity to unify spatial and temporal repetition, Swan refers to this granulated medium as ‘Paving.’ All the human, figurative elements to these works are represented by a commonly recognisable alien type aesthetic.

This references ecological concerns of habitation and sustainability, raising the question: are we alienating ourselves from the only known accessible habitable planet in the universe? The comedy of uncertainty is a recurring theme within the work, with a path of risk and the opportunity of loss offered willingly. Swan promotes discussions of impermanence, with an invitation to view a reflection of one’s cellular transience.

Swan has exhibited in the UK, TURKEY, ITALY and MEXICO and features in numerous prominent art collections.
